NEW YORK — Today marks the 24th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, when Al-Qaeda hijackers crashed passenger planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and forced United Airlines Flight 93 to crash in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back.
Nearly 3,000 lives were lost in the coordinated attacks, which reshaped U.S. foreign and domestic policy and led to the global war on terrorism.
Across New York and the nation, ceremonies are being held to honor the victims and first responders who sacrificed their lives on that day.
