Iran’s Shahid Bagheri drone carrier, converted from the 2000-built container ship Perarin, is reportedly approaching the end of its operational lifespan, raising questions about structural integrity and long-term viability. At approximately 26 years old, the vessel aligns with the typical commercial shipping life expectancy of 25 to 30 years, making its continued naval operations increasingly challenging.  

Despite its age, the Shahid Bagheri continues to serve as a platform for Iran’s growing asymmetric naval capabilities in the Persian Gulf. The 180-meter angled deck allows for routine drone takeoffs and landings, as well as helicopter operations, reflecting Tehran’s focus on leveraging unmanned systems to enhance regional maritime reach. Video footage from recent exercises demonstrates coordinated drone launches and recoveries, highlighting the carrier’s active role in Iran’s maritime strategy.  

Experts caution that the combination of age and the stresses of repeated drone and helicopter operations could impact the vessel’s structural reliability over time. However, the Shahid Bagheri remains a visible symbol of Iran’s naval modernization efforts, showcasing how older platforms are repurposed to project power without the costs of building entirely new warships.  

While the carrier continues routine missions, its advancing age underscores the broader challenges facing Iran’s fleet as it seeks to balance ambition, capability, and maintenance in a fleet largely composed of converted civilian vessels. The Shahid Bagheri’s continued operation illustrates Tehran’s determination to maintain a presence in strategic maritime zones, even as technical limitations and vessel longevity pose growing concerns.
