Classified IDF Unit Veteran Charged with Spying for Iran in Shocking Case

Israeli authorities have cleared for publication a deeply troubling espionage case involving a man who once served in a classified IDF unit. The Israeli citizen, who completed both mandatory and reserve duty in the sensitive unit, has been formally charged with spying for Iran. The indictment, filed on July 16 in the Tel Aviv District Court, accuses him of contact with a foreign agent and attempted delivery of information intended to benefit the enemy. A senior official familiar with the case described it to Kan News as “one of the most shocking cases ever exposed.”

According to the State Attorney’s Office, an investigation by the Defense Ministry’s Arzim Major Crimes Unit and the Shin Bet found that the defendant maintained contact with an individual who identified himself as an Iranian intelligence operative. At one point, he was asked to help recruit an active-duty Israeli soldier to establish a direct line to the same Iranian network. The remaining details, including the identities of those involved, remain under a partial gag order. Security agencies issued a clear public warning: Israeli citizens must avoid any contact with foreign elements from enemy states or unidentified individuals and should report any suspicious approaches immediately.

The defendant’s attorney, Nati Rom, offered a sharply different account, calling the episode an isolated lack of caution and “a joke that went too far.” He insisted there was no allegation of malicious intent, financial gain, or desire to harm Israel’s security, and argued that the facts do not support the charges. Prosecutors and security officials, however, see the case as part of a broader Iranian effort to recruit informants with military knowledge during a period of heightened conflict.
