FORT WORTH — Dozens of firefighters battled a massive overnight blaze at the recently closed S.S. Dillow Elementary School on the city’s east side.
Shortly after midnight, the Fort Worth Fire Department was dispatched to the 4000 block of Avenue N, where heavy smoke and flames were pouring from the vacant two-story building.
Crews initially attempted an interior attack while others searched the structure to ensure no one was inside. But as flames spread quickly through the walls and roof, the Incident Commander ordered a defensive strategy, pulling crews out and deploying three aerial ladder trucks to contain the fire from outside.
The response was significant — more than 80 firefighters, 18 trucks, and multiple support vehicles were called in under a second alarm. Crews worked for over two and a half hours before the fire was brought under control.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Investigators are working to determine what caused the fire.
