GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A controversial new ordinance could soon hold parents and guardians legally accountable for their children’s misconduct, even facing possible jail time.

Under the proposal, adults could be punished if their child is found responsible for a range of offenses, from vandalism and shoplifting to bullying and curfew violations. Local officials say the measure is designed to curb rising juvenile crime and encourage stronger parental involvement.

Supporters argue that the law would create accountability and deter repeat offenses, stressing that parental neglect often contributes to youth misbehavior. Critics, however, warn that the ordinance unfairly criminalizes parents, potentially punishing families already struggling with economic and social challenges.
