Newly released aerial footage from Prince George’s County Police shows the dangers of so-called “illegal car takeovers” that have been plaguing Maryland communities.
The video captures dozens of people crowding around cars spinning at high speeds in parking lots, creating chaotic and dangerous scenes. Police say these events have grown in frequency, posing risks to both participants and bystanders.
The footage surfaced amid a broader political fight over crime in Maryland. Governor Wes Moore recently invited President Donald Trump to join him on a “safety walk” in Baltimore to highlight efforts to reduce violence. Trump, however, has sharply criticized Moore, claiming he has failed on public safety. In an August post on Truth Social, the president declared he would send in troops if necessary and mocked Baltimore’s crime ranking.
Adding to the urgency, authorities charged 18-year-old Naef Salmo of Millersville in connection with a crash at one of these takeovers that left a woman seriously injured. Police say they remain committed to cracking down on the gatherings before more lives are put at risk.
