An iconic chapter in aviation history came to a close as Airbus’s Beluga ST5 completed its final flight, landing at Chester Hawarden Airport in Wales and officially retiring the A300-600ST “Beluga” from active service. The aircraft, registered F-GSTF, marked the end of an era for one of the most recognizable cargo planes ever built.

Nicknamed the “flying whale” for its oversized, bulbous fuselage, the Beluga ST was designed to transport massive aircraft components such as fuselage sections and wings between Airbus production sites across Europe. Entering service in 1995, the fleet of five Beluga ST aircraft played a critical role in enabling Airbus’s just-in-time manufacturing system, linking facilities in France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

Over nearly three decades of operation, the Beluga ST fleet logged more than 1.5 million flight hours, becoming a symbol of both engineering ingenuity and industrial efficiency. Its unmistakable profile made it a favorite among aviation enthusiasts while quietly serving as a logistical backbone for Airbus assembly lines in Toulouse and Hamburg.

With the retirement of the ST5, Airbus fully transitions to the newer Beluga XL, a larger and more capable successor designed to handle increased production demands. While the Beluga XL will continue ferrying oversized components, the original Beluga’s legacy remains secure, with discussions underway about preserving the aircraft for public display.

The final landing at Hawarden was more than a routine flight—it was a farewell to an aircraft that redefined heavy air transport and became an enduring icon of modern aviation.
