Iranian Firms Launch Construction of Strategic Kajaran Tunnel in Armenia

Iranian companies have begun construction of the 7.2-kilometer Kajaran Tunnel in Armenia’s Syunik region, marking a significant step in the North-South Road Corridor project. The work is being carried out by Tunnel Sadd Ariana and Abad Rahan Pars under a contract that positions the tunnel as one of the most demanding engineering efforts in the Caucasus. Once finished, the project will give Iran shorter and more efficient overland access toward the Black Sea region. The development comes as Tehran continues to expand its regional connectivity despite ongoing international sanctions.

The tunnel is designed to bypass the high-altitude Meghri Mountain Pass, cutting travel time from the Iranian border to Kajaran by roughly half and shortening the route by about 14 kilometers. Officials involved in the project say the new path will also improve safety and increase transit capacity for commercial traffic. Construction began in late June 2026 and is expected to transform a difficult stretch of roadway into a more reliable corridor for goods and travelers. These improvements are intended to strengthen Iran’s northward trade links through Armenian territory.

For Iran, the completed tunnel represents a practical gain in regional mobility and economic reach. By enhancing overland routes to Black Sea ports, Tehran can further diversify its transit options and reduce reliance on more restricted pathways. The project underscores Iran’s determination to deepen infrastructure ties with neighboring countries even as external pressure remains high.
