A teenage boy riding an electric bike was tragically killed Sunday evening after a high-speed police pursuit ended in a fatal crash on Long Island, authorities confirmed.
According to the Suffolk County Police Department, officers attempted to stop the 17-year-old shortly after 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of Montauk Highway and Oakdale Avenue in Sayville. The teen reportedly fled from police on an unregistered e-bike, prompting a short chase through residential streets.
Moments later, the teen lost control of the e-bike and collided with a turning vehicle. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but the boy was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at South Shore University Hospital.
Witnesses described the scene as “chaotic,” with bystanders attempting to help the teen before paramedics arrived.
“He was just a kid,” said one nearby resident. “You never think something like this will happen right outside your house.”
The police department says the incident is under active investigation. Body cam and dashcam footage are being reviewed to determine whether proper procedures were followed during the pursuit.
Community leaders are calling for a review of chase policies, particularly in cases involving minors and lightweight vehicles like e-bikes.
The identity of the teen has not been released pending family notification.
