MEDITERRANEAN SEA — The Israeli Navy intercepted the vessel “Handala” on Friday while it was en route to Gaza as part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition’s mission to deliver humanitarian aid. The incident occurred in international waters, raising immediate international scrutiny and diplomatic concern.

Aboard the Handala were 21 unarmed civilians representing 12 countries, including parliamentarians, doctors, journalists, and human rights defenders. Organizers stated the ship was carrying non-military humanitarian supplies intended for civilians in Gaza, as part of a broader campaign to challenge Israel’s blockade of the territory.

According to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the vessel was approached by Israeli naval forces, which ordered it to change course. A standoff ensued, during which communications with the crew were temporarily lost. The Israeli Navy later confirmed the vessel was redirected to an Israeli port, where those aboard were detained for questioning.

No injuries have been reported, but human rights groups and some foreign governments have condemned the interception, citing the mission’s peaceful intent and the vessel’s location in international waters.

The Israeli government defended its actions, claiming the interception was legal under maritime enforcement protocols tied to the Gaza blockade, which it maintains is necessary for national security. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, however, has labeled the operation a violation of international law and has called for the immediate release of all passengers and crew.

As of now, diplomatic efforts are reportedly underway to resolve the matter and secure the release of those detained.
