Tensions between Ukraine and Russia escalated overnight as both countries exchanged drone and missile strikes, just hours before a high-stakes summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

Ukrainian drone attacks wounded at least three people and ignited fires in two southern Russian regions, including at an oil refinery, according to local officials. Russia responded with its own cross-border strikes, further intensifying the conflict on the eve of critical diplomatic talks.

Speaking at the Kennedy Center in Washington on Wednesday, Trump revealed that he has discussed a potential three-way meeting with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. “There’s a very good chance we will have a second meeting that will be more productive than the first,” Trump said, noting that the follow-up could happen “almost immediately” after his Friday summit with Putin.

The U.S. president confirmed he had spoken with Zelensky and European leaders ahead of the Alaska meeting, signaling a push for rapid diplomacy if the initial talks with Putin yield progress. “If they’d like to have me there, I’ll be there,” Trump added.
