As the Jewish New Year approached, IDF Spokesperson Brigadier-General Effie Defrin gave a stark update on operations in Gaza and the status of Israeli hostages, saying, “We have no other choice but to fight for our future.” Defrin stressed that Israel’s mission remains twofold: to dismantle Hamas’s terror networks and to secure the release of the 48 hostages still held in Gaza.

Defrin accused Hamas of deliberately endangering civilians to prolong the conflict, alleging that militants opened fire on a United Nations team and used stolen UN vehicles to frustrate aid and evacuation efforts. The IDF says those actions are part of a broader tactic that sacrifices Gazan civilians rather than protects them.

The spokesman also alleged that Hamas fighters robbed multiple UNICEF aid trucks — including consignments of baby formula — depriving infants of life-saving supplies. Israeli officials used the claims to underline the humanitarian and security challenges that complicate aid delivery inside Gaza.

Amid rising military operations in Gaza City, Israeli leaders framed the campaign as necessary to prevent further attacks and to bring the remaining hostages home. International organizations and some foreign governments continue to press for greater protection for civilians and unimpeded humanitarian access as fighting intensifies.

The situation remains fluid and heavily contested: Israeli military statements and battlefield claims are being reported alongside concerns from the UN and humanitarian agencies about civilian suffering and restricted aid. Independent verification of some battlefield claims is ongoing as journalists and agencies attempt to corroborate events on the ground.
