Secretary Marco Rubio issued a firm call for the release of hostages still held by Hamas, stressing that their freedom is essential for any chance at peace and recovery in Gaza.

“The hostages need to be released. There are 20 living hostages — they should all be released,” Rubio said. “If there is no more Hamas, then I think the people of Gaza have a chance… to rebuild it into a place where people can live again.”

His remarks highlight the dual focus of U.S. policy in the region: securing the safety of hostages while emphasizing the need to dismantle Hamas as a governing and militant force. Rubio suggested that only after Hamas is removed can Gaza begin a process of reconstruction and renewal.

Supporters praised the statement as a strong stance against terrorism and in support of civilians, while critics warned that eliminating Hamas without a clear governance plan could risk further instability.

The hostage crisis continues to draw international attention, with negotiations ongoing but no breakthroughs yet announced.
