Israeli President Isaac Herzog addressed the Jewish community of Australia on Sunday following a deadly terror attack at a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, delivering a message of solidarity while sharply criticizing what he described as Australia’s failure to adequately confront rising antisemitism.
Speaking from the President’s Residence in Jerusalem, Herzog condemned the attack on a Chabad Hanukkah event in the Bondi Beach area, where gunmen killed at least 11 people and wounded dozens more. He described the assault as an act of antisemitic terrorism and expressed deep sorrow for the victims and their families.
“We have repeatedly warned the Australian government about the need to uproot the criminal and widespread antisemitism in their country,” Herzog said, emphasizing that the violence did not emerge in a vacuum. He urged Australian authorities to take decisive action to protect Jewish communities and confront extremist ideologies before they escalate into mass-casualty attacks.
Herzog’s remarks reflect longstanding concerns raised by Israeli officials and Jewish organizations regarding the sharp rise in antisemitic incidents across Australia in recent years. Jewish community leaders have reported a surge in threats, vandalism, harassment, and physical attacks, particularly since October 2023, mirroring broader global trends.
The president reaffirmed Israel’s unwavering support for the Jewish diaspora, stating that Israel stands shoulder to shoulder with Australian Jews during what he described as a painful and alarming moment. He also praised first responders and civilians who acted courageously during the attack, noting that their actions saved lives.
As Australia continues its investigation and national mourning, Herzog’s message underscores growing international pressure on Western governments to confront antisemitism more forcefully, not only through condemnation but through sustained law enforcement, education, and policy action.
