Dramatic body camera footage released by the Town of Groton Police Department shows officers rescuing a man who had spent approximately 15 minutes submerged in freezing marina waters in Groton, Connecticut. The nighttime rescue unfolded on a dark dock, where officers arrived to find the victim struggling in sub-zero conditions and showing signs of severe hypothermia.
According to police, the man’s survival was made possible in part by a friend who remained with him in the water and kept his head above the surface, preventing him from drowning while help was on the way. When officers arrived, they immediately coordinated efforts to pull the man from the icy water and onto the dock, despite the victim reporting that he was losing feeling in his arms and legs.
The bodycam video captures the urgency of the moment as officers worked together to lift the hypothermic man to safety, demonstrating calm communication and decisive action under extreme conditions. Once out of the water, the victim was secured and transported to a local hospital for further medical treatment.
The rescue highlights the importance of rapid police response and teamwork in life-threatening emergencies, especially during winter conditions when cold exposure can quickly become fatal. Groton police credited both the quick actions of the responding officers and the victim’s friend for preventing a tragic outcome.
