CALIFORNIA — A massive wildfire sparked by lightning has devastated the historic town of Chinese Camp, an abandoned Gold Rush–era settlement that once housed nearly 5,000 Chinese miners.
The blaze tore through the community, reducing much of the area to ash and rubble. Fire officials said dry conditions and high winds fueled the spread, making containment difficult.
Chinese Camp, founded during the mid-1800s California Gold Rush, was once a thriving settlement and remains a significant cultural and historical site. While it has long been abandoned, it stood as a reminder of the contributions of Chinese immigrants to the state’s mining history.
No injuries were reported, but state officials expressed sorrow over the destruction of the landmark, calling it a loss to California’s cultural heritage. Fire crews remain on site working to contain hot spots and prevent the flames from spreading further.
