In a groundbreaking moment for modern warfare, the U.S. Army has successfully carried out its first air-to-air kill using an armed first-person view (FPV) drone. The milestone event took place over Tabernacle Field at Fort Rucker during a demonstration ahead of the U.S. Army Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Summit.
Piloted by a “Sky Soldier” from the 173rd Airborne Brigade in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and DEVCOM AC’s Project Shank, the FPV drone was equipped with a claymore mine. During a simulated aerial dogfight, the drone intercepted and destroyed an opposing unmanned aircraft midair, marking a first in U.S. military history.
Officials say the successful test showcases the Army’s rapid advancements in drone warfare, signaling a future where small, agile, and inexpensive drones can neutralize airborne threats in real time.
