Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for armed security at public gatherings following the December 14, 2025, mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach that left 15 people dead.
In a video statement released after the attack, Netanyahu argued that the presence of armed individuals could have quickly neutralized the assailants and prevented the high casualty toll.
“Just imagine if you had on that beach, on that Hanukkah gathering, several armed people,” Netanyahu said. “If you had several armed guards—ten, fifteen, even five—it would be over. That saves the day. And that’s required right now.”
Australian authorities have classified the attack as an act of antisemitic terrorism, with two gunmen reportedly targeting Jewish attendees during the public event. Investigators confirmed that at least one of the attackers legally owned firearms under Australia’s existing gun laws, a detail that has intensified debate over security policy and public safety measures.
Netanyahu pointed to Israel’s long-standing practice of deploying armed security at schools, synagogues, and large public events, arguing that rapid armed response has repeatedly reduced casualties during attempted attacks. Israeli officials say such measures are a cornerstone of the country’s counterterrorism strategy.
The comments have drawn mixed reactions in Australia. Supporters argue the attack exposes vulnerabilities in relying solely on restrictive gun laws without robust on-site security, particularly for high-risk or symbolic targets. Critics counter that expanding armed presence in civilian spaces risks escalating violence and undermining Australia’s gun control framework, which has been credited with reducing firearm-related deaths since the 1990s.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has emphasized firearm reduction measures in response to the attack, announcing plans for a new national gun buyback scheme, while also pledging increased protection for Jewish institutions and public events.
The Bondi Beach shooting has prompted renewed international debate over the balance between gun control, armed security, and counterterrorism, as governments grapple with protecting public gatherings amid rising extremist threats.
