Madrid Declares First-Ever Wildfire National Emergency as Inferno Rages

Spain is confronting what officials are calling one of the worst wildfire emergencies in the country's history, after three separate blazes near Villa del Prado, San Martin de Valdeiglesias, and Almorox merged into a single, ferocious fire now tearing through the Sierra Oeste region west of Madrid. More than 55,000 people have either been evacuated or ordered to shelter in place as the flames, fueled by soaring temperatures, strong winds, and tinder-dry conditions, have scorched roughly 22,000 hectares and continue to spread. Eleven municipalities have been fully cleared, with thousands of displaced residents now sheltering in emergency reception centers set up across the region.

The scale of the crisis prompted Spain to place the response under national control, marking the country's first-ever national emergency declaration tied specifically to a wildfire. Under the elevated response level, overall direction of the operation has shifted to the Interior Ministry, with the Military Emergency Unit taking command of ground operations. Officials report that 21 care facilities have already been evacuated as a precaution, while emergency medical teams have treated roughly 150 people for fire-related injuries and smoke exposure since the crisis began.

Hundreds of firefighters, military emergency crews, ground vehicles, and water-bombing aircraft are now engaged in an around-the-clock battle to contain the flames, even as embers continue jumping considerable distances and smoke spreads across large swaths of the region. Madrid's regional president has described the blaze as the worst in the area's history, with local officials warning that conditions remain volatile and that the fire's advance toward additional municipalities in the coming days cannot be ruled out. As Spain endures one of its most severe wildfire seasons in recent memory, authorities are urging residents in the affected areas to follow evacuation orders immediately and avoid returning to threatened zones until crews confirm it is safe to do so.
