President Donald Trump expressed gratitude to Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday after the two leaders announced “progress” on a deal aimed at keeping TikTok available in the United States.
The announcement comes after months of uncertainty surrounding the popular social media app, which faced potential bans over national security concerns. Both Washington and Beijing confirmed that talks had advanced, easing tensions and reassuring millions of TikTok users in the U.S.
“President Xi and I made progress,” Trump said, thanking the Chinese leader for his role in the negotiations. While the exact terms of the deal have not yet been made public, officials suggested that it involves new safeguards to address security and data privacy issues.
The development is seen as a breakthrough in U.S.–China relations, which have faced strain over trade, technology, and global security matters. Analysts say the agreement not only preserves a widely used platform but also shows the possibility of cooperation between the two countries despite ongoing differences.
TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, remains one of the most downloaded apps in the U.S., particularly among younger audiences. The deal is expected to ensure continued access while addressing concerns raised by American lawmakers.
