A dramatic police chase in the West Midlands ended with arrests after a car thief attempted to use a fire extinguisher to disrupt pursuing officers, according to footage released by West Midlands Police.

Dashcam video shows a stolen vehicle traveling at high speed while a passenger discharges a fire extinguisher from inside the car, apparently in an effort to obscure officers’ visibility and interfere with the pursuit. At one point during the chase, the extinguisher itself was thrown from the moving vehicle toward police.

Authorities identified the passenger as 19-year-old Shane McCallion. Police said the vehicle had been reported stolen in late October and was later spotted by officers, prompting the pursuit, which reached speeds of approximately 75 miles per hour.

Despite the attempted smokescreen, officers were able to bring the chase to an end without serious injury. McCallion was arrested and charged with theft and aiding and abetting dangerous driving.

Police confirmed that McCallion pleaded guilty in Birmingham Magistrates’ Court earlier this month. He received a suspended sentence, bringing the incident to a close after what authorities described as a reckless and dangerous attempt to evade law enforcement.

West Midlands Police said the footage highlights the risks posed by high-speed pursuits and the determination of officers to protect the public while bringing suspects into custody.
