WASHINGTON, D.C. — House Speaker Mike Johnson is defending the recently passed “One Big Beautiful Bill,” pushing back on claims that it would cut Medicaid benefits.
“The One Big Beautiful Bill does NOT cut Medicaid — what it does is strengthen the program,” Johnson said.
According to the Speaker, the bill includes reforms aimed at restoring integrity to Medicaid by tightening eligibility requirements for non-disabled, childless adults.
“You had able-bodied young men, for example, with no dependents who were riding the wagon. It’s not right,” Johnson added, referencing what he called abuse of the program designed to help the truly vulnerable.
The reforms seek to prioritize resources for low-income families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities, while encouraging work and self-sufficiency among those capable of employment.
The legislation is expected to face criticism from opponents who argue it places undue burdens on certain recipients, but Johnson and Republican leaders maintain that the changes will improve long-term sustainability and reduce fraud.
