Russia and Belarus have kicked off their joint military exercise, Zapad-2025, just a week after 19 Russian drones reportedly entered Polish airspace. The large-scale drills are designed to simulate a defensive response against what Moscow and Minsk describe as a “hypothetical Western invasion.”
During the maneuvers, fighter jets thundered across the skies while tanks pounded mock wooden structures on the ground. Drones carried out precision strikes against designated targets, clearing the way for ground troops to storm in and raise Russian and Belarusian flags over a symbolic “liberated” village inside Belarus.
The spectacle reflects both countries’ efforts to showcase military readiness and solidarity amid rising tensions with NATO. While officials in Moscow and Minsk insist the drills are defensive in nature, Western analysts warn they carry clear messages of deterrence toward neighboring nations.
Zapad exercises have long been a point of contention between Russia and the West, often seen as rehearsals for large-scale conflict scenarios. This year’s edition comes at a time of heightened concern in Eastern Europe, following repeated incidents of Russian drones and missiles straying into NATO territory.
Observers say the drills underscore the growing military cooperation between Russia and Belarus, with Belarusian territory serving as a critical staging ground for Moscow’s strategic maneuvers.
