American Oil Giant Rolls Into Syria, Unlocking Billions in Buried Crude

A US-based energy company, HKN Energy, has begun full-scale oil exploration in Syria's Hasakah province, deploying massive seismic vibrator trucks across the desert to map underground rock layers and pinpoint untapped reserves ahead of drilling. The Dallas-based firm is operating under a landmark 25-year contract with Syria's state-owned Syrian Petroleum Company, giving American industry a leading role in rebuilding a region long crippled by war, sanctions, and neglect. The deal, one of the largest foreign energy investments in Syria since the war began, splits production shares among HKN, the Syrian government, and the SDF-linked al-Jazeera Oil Services Company, and covers a network of fields across Al-Hasakah province. Backers of the project point to HKN's deep regional experience operating fields in neighboring Iraq as a strong sign the company can deliver results where others might hesitate.

The push follows the collapse of the Assad regime, the lifting of longstanding sanctions, and an aggressive campaign by Damascus to court American energy firms as the cornerstone of its economic revival. Syrian officials have publicly forecast production climbing toward 1 million barrels per day by the end of the decade as more Western companies follow HKN's lead into the country. For an administration that has championed American energy dominance and private investment as tools of foreign policy, HKN's entry into Syria stands as a tangible, on-the-ground example of that strategy paying off in one of the world's most closely watched post-conflict economies.
