WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator John Kennedy delivered a fiery warning on the Senate floor after a recall of shrimp sold at Walmart and Kroger, claiming weak U.S. inspections are putting consumers at risk.
Holding up a poster of the movie Alien, Kennedy blasted Indonesian shrimp imports that he said could be contaminated with radioactive material. “This shrimp could turn you into the alien — at a minimum it’ll cause you to grow an extra ear,” he joked, before turning serious about the need for stronger oversight of foreign seafood.
The recall has sparked concerns over food safety and the reliability of inspection systems that regulate imported goods. Kennedy called for tighter controls and enforcement to ensure Americans are not exposed to dangerous products.
Walmart and Kroger have not yet released detailed statements about the scope of the recall, but officials urged consumers to check labels and avoid eating the affected products.
