Surveillance footage from Chicago’s West Town neighborhood shows a delivery robot operated by Serve Robotics crashing into a glass CTA bus shelter, shattering the structure and scattering debris across the sidewalk. The robot, used for Uber Eats deliveries, appeared unable to detect the transparent barrier, resulting in the collision. Fortunately, no bystanders were injured in the incident.

The crash, which occurred on March 23, 2026, marks the second similar  involving an autonomous delivery bot within days. Observers note that such incidents highlight persistent challenges in computer vision systems, particularly when dealing with transparent or low-contrast surfaces like glass. These limitations can lead to navigation errors in dense urban environments.

Overall, the Chicago crash underscores both the rapid advancement and the ongoing limitations of autonomous delivery systems. As companies like Serve Robotics expand their operations, addressing these technical challenges will be critical to ensuring safe integration into everyday urban life.
