President Donald Trump sharply criticized Chicago’s mayor, accusing city leadership of downplaying the scale of law enforcement efforts and failing to address rampant violence.
“I watched as a very incompetent mayor from Chicago said, ‘Well, what do they know? They only arrested 9 people,’” Trump said. “We actually arrested a total of well over 1,000 people, apprehended scores of illegal aliens, and seized dozens of illegal firearms.”
Calling Chicago “a killing field right now,” Trump argued that city officials refuse to acknowledge the depth of the crisis.
Chicago has recorded the highest number of murders of any U.S. city for 13 consecutive years, according to crime data. Despite ongoing efforts, the city continues to struggle with gun violence, gang activity, and strained police-community relations.
Trump’s remarks highlight the ongoing debate between federal and local officials over crime prevention, policing strategies, and the role of federal intervention in America’s most violent cities.
