President Donald Trump expressed frustration over India’s continued purchases of Russian oil, revealing that his administration has responded with steep tariffs on the country.
“I’ve been very disappointed that India would be buying so much oil from Russia, and I let them know that — and we put a very big tariff on India,” Trump said. Despite the criticism, the president stressed his personal relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains positive. “I get along very well with Modi, as you know,” he added.
India has significantly increased its imports of discounted Russian crude in recent years, taking advantage of lower prices while Western nations imposed sanctions on Moscow. The decision has been a point of contention between Washington and New Delhi, as the U.S. has pushed allies to limit economic ties with Russia.
Trump’s remarks highlight the balancing act between economic policy and diplomacy. While the tariffs are intended to pressure India to reduce its reliance on Russian energy, maintaining strong U.S.–India relations remains a key strategic priority.
Analysts say the move could test trade relations between the two countries, especially as India seeks to expand its role on the global stage while managing partnerships with both Washington and Moscow.
