COLUMBUS, Ohio — A shocking video released by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) shows a driver crashing into a freeway safety patrol vehicle on Interstate 270 near Sawmill Road in Columbus on Tuesday.
According to ODOT, the patrol vehicle had just finished assisting with the cleanup of an earlier crash when it was struck. Dash camera footage shows the driver traveling along the shoulder of the highway before violently colliding with the stationary ODOT vehicle.
Fortunately, officials confirmed that no life-threatening injuries were reported. However, the impact served as a chilling reminder of the dangers faced daily by road safety crews and first responders.
“This is yet another reminder to move over, slow down, and pay attention while on the road,” ODOT said in a statement shared on Facebook.
The department also revealed concerning statistics: contractors operating ODOT’s freeway safety patrol vehicles have been hit 13 times in 2025 alone, while ODOT employees, vehicles, and equipment have been struck a total of 92 times this year.
The agency continues to urge motorists to follow Ohio’s “Move Over” law, which requires drivers to slow down and change lanes when approaching stopped vehicles with flashing lights.
“Again, move over, slow down, pay attention!” ODOT reiterated, stressing that a moment’s inattention can have devastating consequences for those working to keep highways safe.
