House Speaker Mike Johnson called on Democrats to prevent a government shutdown, pointing to how Republicans acted when they were in the minority during the Biden administration.
“During the Biden Administration, there were 13 threatened shutdowns. The Republicans, in the minority, did the right thing — we kept the government open. We’re simply asking for the Democrats to do the same,” Johnson said.
The Speaker’s remarks come as negotiations remain gridlocked in Washington, with Democrats pushing for a $1.5 trillion spending package that Republicans have strongly rejected.
Johnson argued that keeping the government funded should rise above partisan politics, warning that a shutdown would harm federal employees, disrupt services, and create uncertainty for American families.
Republicans insist that Democrats must scale back their demands, while Democrats maintain that their proposal addresses pressing needs. With the deadline fast approaching, Johnson’s appeal highlights the intense political battle over spending priorities and responsibility for keeping the government running.
