A massive wildfire north of Madrid has forced the evacuation of more than 1,000 residents as emergency teams race to contain the spreading flames.
The blaze, which erupted near the town of Tres Cantos on Sunday, August 10, has been fueled by soaring summer temperatures and dry conditions. Authorities say the fire is part of a wave of wildfires sweeping across southern Europe, including France and Portugal, amid an unprecedented heatwave.
Firefighters from the Comunidad de Madrid, supported by the Civil Guard, worked through the night to protect homes and halt the fire’s advance. Several neighborhoods were evacuated as a precaution, with residents urged to seek shelter in designated emergency centers.
Meteorologists report that temperatures in parts of Spain are approaching 40°C, creating dangerous conditions for fire containment and increasing the risk of new outbreaks. Officials warn that the coming days will be critical as crews face challenging terrain and shifting winds.
