The question immediately sparked a tense exchange between contenders, exposing sharp political and ideological divisions on how local leaders should approach global issues.

Zohran Mamdani, known for his socialist views, avoided directly crediting President Trump, emphasizing instead the need to “focus on peace and justice for all sides.” Meanwhile, Curtis Sliwa responded that Trump’s involvement “deserved recognition,” arguing that leadership means giving credit where it’s due, regardless of politics.

The exchange highlighted how foreign policy issues, particularly the Israel–Hamas conflict, continue to shape the tone of New York’s political discourse—even in a race centered on city governance.
