Nepal descended into chaos Monday as violent clashes erupted between protesters and security forces following the government’s ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, and X.

At least 14 people have been killed and over 100 injured, according to The Kathmandu Post. Authorities confirmed the army has been deployed to enforce law and order in areas of Kathmandu most affected by the unrest.

The ban has ignited widespread anger, particularly among Generation Z, many of whom rely on social platforms for communication, activism, and livelihoods. Thousands of young demonstrators flooded the streets, accusing the government of silencing dissent and curbing free speech.

A government spokesperson defended the move as a measure to “maintain stability and combat disinformation,” but rights groups and opposition figures have condemned the ban as an authoritarian overreach that risks further destabilizing the nation.
