Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has sharply criticized recent ceasefire proposals in the ongoing Ukraine conflict, calling them a tactic to “buy time” for Ukrainian forces to reorganize and resupply. His comments, aired during an interview on RT, come as Moscow continues to consolidate control over several contested areas in eastern Ukraine.

“When people now say ceasefire, we know that they just want to buy time,” Lavrov stated, directly referencing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s diplomatic appeals for a temporary halt in hostilities. Lavrov accused Kyiv of using ceasefire discussions as a strategic pause rather than a genuine step toward peace.

The statement aligns with Russia’s broader rejection of Western-backed ceasefire initiatives, including those discussed in recent U.S.-brokered talks involving President Trump. Moscow has repeatedly maintained that any serious negotiations must address what it considers the core issues of the war — including NATO’s continued eastward expansion and Western military support to Kyiv.
