CANBERRA – Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers has thrown his support behind U.S.-led efforts to push Russian President Vladimir Putin toward serious peace negotiations over the ongoing war in Ukraine.
In an interview with Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell, Chalmers said Moscow must demonstrate genuine commitment to ending the conflict. “Putin needs to show that he’s actually serious here,” he stressed.
Chalmers emphasized that Australia stands firmly with its allies, calling for a “proper, lasting peace on Ukrainian terms.” He added: “The war has dragged on for too long, the Russian aggression has dragged on for too long.”
The comments come as Washington intensifies its diplomatic push, with President Donald Trump holding high-stakes talks with Putin in Alaska and preparing for a follow-up meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington.
Australia has consistently backed Ukraine through humanitarian aid, sanctions on Russia, and international pressure for accountability. Chalmers’ remarks signal Canberra’s alignment with U.S. and European partners as they seek to move the war closer to a negotiated end.
Analysts say the challenge now lies in whether Russia will engage constructively, as skepticism remains high over Moscow’s intentions.
