Juneau, Alaska, has declared a local emergency following record snowfall in December 2025, which brought a total of 82 inches—far exceeding the monthly average of 17.5 inches. The unprecedented accumulation triggered multiple hazards, including collapsed roofs, avalanche risks, and stress on city infrastructure.

The heavy, wet snow caused significant damage at Auke Bay Marina, where several boats sank under the sheer weight of the accumulation. Video footage shows docks heavily coated with snow and vessels partially or fully submerged, with snow loads equivalent to roughly 8 to 16 inches of water exceeding the structural capacity of the boats.

Authorities have warned that more snow is expected, further increasing risks to property and public safety. Emergency response teams are actively working to clear streets, reinforce vulnerable structures, and assist affected residents and businesses. Officials urge the public to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and report hazards promptly.

Meteorologists note that such extreme snowfall events are rare but increasingly possible due to changing weather patterns in Alaska. Juneau residents face continued challenges as cleanup efforts and structural inspections proceed amid ongoing snow accumulation.
