UKRAINE STRIKES: Drones Set Russia’s Nizhnekamsk Oil Refinery Ablaze

Ukrainian drones struck Russia’s Nizhnekamsk Oil Refinery early on August 20, 2026, setting the large industrial complex on fire. Footage circulating online shows FP-1 drones approaching and impacting the TANECO facility in Tatarstan, followed by visible flames and heavy smoke rising over the site. The attack targeted one of Russia’s major refining hubs and produced an immediate, dramatic response on the ground. Emergency services responded as fires spread across parts of the complex.

TANECO ranks among Russia’s largest oil refineries, with an annual capacity exceeding 16 million tons. The plant produces gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel that support both civilian and military needs. Russian channels reported at least 12 deaths linked to the strike. The combination of a high-value energy target and reported casualties has drawn significant attention to the operation.

The Nizhnekamsk attack forms part of Ukraine’s broader campaign of deep strikes against Russian energy infrastructure. Similar recent operations have included hits on an oil terminal in Krasnodar Krai. Ukrainian forces have intensified these long-range drone and missile efforts in an attempt to disrupt fuel supplies and complicate Russian logistics. Each successful strike on refining and storage capacity adds pressure on Russia’s ability to sustain operations.

By reaching deep into Tatarstan and igniting a major production site, the drones demonstrated the expanding reach of Ukraine’s unmanned systems. The visible fires and smoke over Nizhnekamsk provided clear evidence of the impact. As Russian authorities assess the damage and casualties, the strike adds to a growing list of energy facilities hit far from the front lines. The operation underscores the continuing focus on degrading Russia’s fuel production and distribution network.
