Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro sharply criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom’s new redistricting plan, calling it “terrible” and destined to fail.

On his program, Shapiro argued that the proposal is politically motivated and structurally flawed, predicting it will not achieve the results Newsom and Democratic leaders are hoping for. While details of the plan include redrawing district lines to address population shifts, Shapiro claimed the effort could instead backfire, weakening representation and creating new legal challenges.

“Newsom’s plan isn’t about fairness,” Shapiro said. “It’s about consolidating power — and it won’t work.”

Critics of the governor’s proposal echo Shapiro’s concerns, warning that the plan could face lawsuits and accusations of gerrymandering. Supporters, however, argue that the changes are necessary to reflect demographic realities and maintain balanced representation in the state legislature and congressional delegation.

The redistricting battle highlights ongoing political tensions in California, where debates over voting districts have long shaped the balance of power. Analysts expect further challenges ahead as both parties prepare for the 2026 election cycle.
