WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) is calling for a special investigation into Special Counsel Jack Smith, citing a “long series of very questionable decisions” in his handling of criminal charges against President Donald Trump leading up to the 2024 election.
Speaking on Fox News' Hannity, Cotton accused Smith of politically motivated prosecution, suggesting the timing and nature of the charges appear aimed at influencing the outcome of the presidential race.
“Jack Smith has a long series of very questionable decisions,” Cotton said. “It’s clear there are serious concerns about whether justice is being applied impartially, or if this is just another politically driven attack on President Trump.”
Cotton’s call for oversight adds to growing Republican criticism of Smith, who was appointed to lead federal investigations into Trump’s handling of classified documents and alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
Democrats and legal experts have largely defended Smith's independence and professionalism, but Cotton argues that public trust in the process demands transparency and accountability through an external review.
As Trump remains the GOP frontrunner for 2024, the case — and the calls for investigation — are expected to remain at the forefront of political and legal debate.
