A routine disturbance call in Newtown, Connecticut, escalated into a violent confrontation when a police officer was sucker-punched and placed in a chokehold by a suspect, newly released footage shows.

On November 23, 2025, Newtown Police Department officers responded to a 911 call on Hanover Road. Officer Hyvarinen arrived first and made contact with the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Daniel Morris. Bodycam video reveals Morris appearing to surrender with his hands raised—before suddenly striking the officer in the face with a closed fist.

Working alone, Officer Hyvarinen attempted to restrain Morris, who continued resisting and placed the officer in a headlock, cutting off his airway. Despite being outweighed by roughly 220 pounds, the officer managed to lift Morris off the ground and break free from the chokehold.

The struggle continued on the floor, where Morris struck the officer a second time. Officer Hyvarinen responded with what authorities called lawful and proportionate force, ultimately gaining control of the suspect and placing him under arrest.

Both men sustained minor facial injuries. Morris was treated by emergency medical personnel and taken to Danbury Hospital, where he was medically cleared before being booked.

Morris now faces multiple charges, including Assault on Public Safety Personnel, Interfering with an Officer/Resisting Arrest, and Disorderly Conduct. He is being held on a $75,000 cash/surety bond and is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on November 24, 2025.

Law-and-order supporters argue the incident highlights the increasing dangers faced by officers responding to unpredictable calls—often while operating alone. Many praised Officer Hyvarinen’s restraint and ability to regain control despite being ambushed.
