Colombia Recognizes Israeli Sovereignty Over the Golan Heights

In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, Colombia has officially recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. The decision ranks among the first major foreign policy acts of Colombia’s new president, Abelardo de la Espriella. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar welcomed the move, stating that the Colombian president “demonstrated his leadership, his values, and his commitment to Israel and Israel’s security.” The announcement follows a recent meeting between Sa’ar and Colombian officials.

Colombia’s Foreign Ministry cited regional instability, Israel’s legitimate security needs, and the October 7 attacks as key factors behind the recognition. With this step, Colombia becomes only the second country in the world after the United States to formally acknowledge Israeli sovereignty over the territory. The United States took the same position in 2019. Most of the international community continues to view the Golan as occupied Syrian territory, despite Israel’s control of the area since 1967 and its formal annexation in 1981.

The recognition carries both practical and symbolic weight. Control of the Golan Heights remains essential for Israel’s defensive depth against threats from Syria and Iranian-backed forces. By choosing to recognize reality on the ground rather than outdated diplomatic formulas, Colombia’s new leadership has signaled a clear-eyed approach to Middle East security.
