Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries is reportedly in negotiations to partner with Germany on the co-development of engines for the country’s Taurus cruise missiles, potentially linked to the upcoming Taurus NEO variant.

According to defense industry sources, the collaboration aims to enhance the missile’s range, efficiency, and performance through advanced Japanese engineering expertise. The move underscores growing defense cooperation between Tokyo and Berlin, reflecting their shared interests in strengthening deterrence and modernizing capabilities amid global security concerns.

Germany is planning to acquire around 600 upgraded Taurus missiles, with deliveries expected to begin in 2029. The Taurus NEO is projected to feature improved propulsion systems, enhanced targeting precision, and compatibility with future-generation aircraft.

If finalized, the partnership could mark a significant milestone in Japan’s expanding defense-industrial role and deepen its ties with NATO-aligned defense initiatives.
