Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply after Israel launched major airstrikes on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, targeting senior Iran-backed Houthi officials in response to recent UAV and missile attacks.
Early reports suggest that several top commanders may have been hit in the strikes. Among the dead was Ahmed al-Rahwi, the prime minister of the Houthi-run government, whose killing has drawn outrage from Houthi leadership.
In response, the chairman of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council vowed revenge against Israel, declaring that the attacks would not go unanswered. The statement underscores fears of widening regional conflict, as the Houthis—backed by Iran—have intensified their drone and missile campaigns in recent months, frequently targeting Israeli and allied interests.
Israel has not commented on the full scope of the operation, but defense officials signaled the strikes were aimed at degrading Houthi command structures and deterring further cross-border assaults.
Analysts warn that the assassination of high-ranking Houthi figures could trigger a cycle of retaliation, further destabilizing the region and complicating international efforts to contain the ongoing Gaza war and broader Iranian proxy activity.
