President Donald Trump sharply criticized Canada on Friday, accusing its government or affiliated groups of running what he described as a “fake ad” targeting the United States. Speaking to reporters, the president said the incident reflected “dirty pool” tactics that undermine trust between the two allies.
“One of the most difficult countries to deal with has been Canada,” Trump said. “They did a fake ad yesterday. They were caught. That’s dirty pool and you can’t do that.”
According to the president, Canadian officials later apologized and promised to remove the ad after Washington raised objections. However, Trump noted that the ad continued to air for two additional nights before being taken down. “They said, ‘We’re going to take the ad down.’ Well, they did it, but they did it very late,” he added. “I don’t really want to discuss it, but we’ll see how it plays out.”
While details of the ad have not yet been disclosed by the White House, administration officials have characterized the situation as an example of “disinformation” aimed at distorting U.S.–Canada relations amid ongoing trade negotiations.
The president’s comments come amid renewed friction between Washington and Ottawa over trade and energy policy, areas where Trump has pushed for stronger American leverage and fairer treatment. Despite his tough words, U.S. officials maintain that diplomatic engagement with Canada will continue, emphasizing accountability and transparency in bilateral communications.
Trump’s criticism reflects his broader stance on ensuring that America’s allies act with honesty and respect in international dealings — a principle he has frequently underscored since returning to office.
