New York — As Election Day approaches, the spotlight is firmly on two of the most closely watched contests in the nation: the New York City mayoral race and the New Jersey governor’s race. Both elections are set to test party strength and voter sentiment heading into the final stretch of 2025.

In New York City, frontrunner and Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani continues to lead in polls, with former Gov. Andrew Cuomo mounting an independent challenge and Republican Curtis Sliwa rallying conservative and law-and-order voters. The three candidates spent the final campaign weekend making back-to-back appearances across the city’s boroughs, each appealing to dramatically different visions for New York’s future.

Mamdani’s progressive platform has drawn strong support from newly registered voters and younger demographics, while Cuomo has positioned himself as a centrist alternative capable of restoring fiscal discipline and stability. Sliwa, the founder of the Guardian Angels, has focused his message on public safety, border enforcement, and restoring confidence in policing — themes that have resonated among working-class voters frustrated by crime and rising costs.

Across the Hudson, the New Jersey governor’s race is similarly intense. Democrat Mikie Sherrill, campaigning heavily among Latino and suburban voters, is facing a strong challenge from Republican Jack Ciattarelli, who has gained traction on economic and education issues. Ciattarelli, joined by Congressman Mike Lawler in Middletown on Sunday, urged voters to “send a message to Washington” about runaway spending and weak border policy.

Sunday marked the final day of early voting, with turnout reportedly strong across both states — a sign of heightened voter engagement in what could become a pivotal election for regional leadership.

Both contests will serve as an early measure of how voters view the direction of the country under President Trump’s second term, as well as a referendum on local leadership in cities and states facing economic recovery, public safety challenges, and deep political divides.
