FIRE ISLAND, NY — In a stunning display of marine life, large groups of stingrays were recently filmed migrating near the shores of Fire Island, captivating both scientists and beachgoers alike.

The footage shows dozens—possibly hundreds—of rays gliding gracefully beneath the water's surface in a coordinated migration pattern. Experts say this type of behavior is common during warmer months, as rays move in large groups to find food, warmer waters, or to breed.

“It’s an amazing sight and a reminder of how dynamic our coastal ecosystems are,” said a marine biologist from Stony Brook University. “These migrations are a natural part of their life cycle.”

While the event is visually striking, wildlife officials urge the public to observe from a distance and avoid disturbing the rays. Though not typically dangerous, stingrays can react defensively if provoked.
