After nearly two months of anguish and uncertainty, R’ Yitzchak Elmakias z”l has reportedly been laid to rest in Ukraine, ending a 55-day delay that prompted urgent appeals from rabbonim and members of the Jewish community.
Elmakias was found deceased in a wooded area near Uman under circumstances that raised suspicions of foul play. His body subsequently remained in Ukrainian custody while authorities handled the investigation, leaving his family and community waiting for kevurah.
As the delay continued, leading rabbonim gathered in Bnei Brak and issued a ruling calling for his immediate burial. The meeting included Rav Moshe Bransdorfer and Rav Chaim Yosef Dovid Weiss.
The prolonged delay also prompted public appeals and criticism of how the matter was being handled. Some reports raised allegations concerning individuals involved in efforts to arrange the burial, although those claims have not been independently established.
According to a November 5 report, Elmakias was finally buried, bringing an end to the extended wait for kevurah.
Questions surrounding the circumstances of his death and the handling of the case remain unresolved.
