President Donald Trump declared that his administration has delivered a historic turnaround at the U.S.-Mexico border, transforming what he described as the “worst border anywhere in the world” into the strongest in American history within a matter of months.

Speaking from the Oval Office on December 17, 2025, President Trump said the dramatic shift was achieved through decisive enforcement and executive action, rather than new legislation. “We inherited the worst border anywhere in the world, and we quickly turned it into the strongest border in the history of our country,” Trump said. “In other words, in a few short months, we went from worst to best.”

The president contrasted current conditions with policies under the previous administration, which he has repeatedly blamed for record-breaking illegal crossings, migrant releases, and strained law enforcement resources. Trump argued that restoring border control required political will, not congressional gridlock.

Data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection supports a significant decline in illegal border activity. In October 2025, nationwide encounters totaled 30,561, marking the lowest start to a fiscal year on record. The figures reflect a 92 percent drop from the peak of 370,883 encounters recorded during the height of the Biden-era border surge.

Officials also report seven consecutive months with zero migrant releases into the interior, a sharp reversal from prior practices that allowed large numbers of migrants to enter the country while awaiting court proceedings. Administration officials credit expanded enforcement authority, stricter consequences for illegal entry, and renewed support for border personnel.

Supporters of the president view the numbers as validation of Trump’s long-standing argument that border security is a matter of enforcement rather than legislation. They argue the decline has reduced strain on border communities, improved public safety, and restored confidence in the rule of law.

Critics continue to dispute aspects of the administration’s approach, but the White House maintains that the results speak for themselves. By pointing to record-low encounters and an end to mass releases, President Trump framed the border turnaround as one of the defining achievements of his current term, reinforcing his message that strong leadership can deliver rapid and measurable results.
