Ukraine launched one of its largest drone offensives of the war on Sunday, with Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin saying roughly 600 drones were directed toward the Moscow region. Russian authorities said air defenses intercepted or destroyed 201 drones over the region, while Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that 822 Ukrainian drones were shot down across the country during the broader overnight assault. The scale of the attack marked a major escalation in Ukraine’s campaign to strike targets deep inside Russian territory.

One of the most dramatic incidents occurred at a Wildberries logistics complex near Koledino, south of Moscow, where a large fire broke out following the reported drone strike. Footage from the scene showed enormous flames and a thick column of smoke rising from the warehouse, which is one of the Russian retailer’s major distribution facilities. Russian officials reported casualties from the wider wave of attacks, although individual figures and circumstances have varied among reports.

The strikes represent part of Ukraine’s increasingly aggressive effort to hit Russian infrastructure and logistics networks far from the front lines. Ukrainian officials have accused Wildberries facilities of supporting military logistics, while the company and Russian authorities have disputed aspects of those claims. The repeated targeting of the retailer’s warehouses has nevertheless caused significant disruption to Russia’s commercial logistics network.

The massive Ukrainian barrage came as Russia continued its own attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Russian strikes killed and wounded civilians in several parts of Ukraine, while Kyiv and other areas faced continued missile and drone attacks, underscoring the increasingly intense aerial dimension of the war. The latest exchange demonstrates how both sides are expanding their ability to strike targets far beyond the immediate battlefield.

The attack also raises fresh questions about the effectiveness of Russia’s air-defense network around Moscow and the ability of Ukraine’s long-range drone program to sustain large-scale operations. While the exact number of drones that reached their intended targets remains disputed, the reported scale of the barrage and the destruction at the Koledino facility highlight the growing reach of Ukraine’s aerial campaign. With both sides continuing to escalate long-range strikes, the conflict remains a devastating war with civilians and critical infrastructure increasingly caught in the crossfire.
