Turkey has achieved a historic milestone in aviation as the Bayraktar KIZILELMA, an unmanned combat aircraft (UCAV), successfully shot down a jet-powered target using a beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile, marking the first time an unmanned aircraft has accomplished such a feat.
The test, conducted in Sinop, demonstrated KIZILELMA’s ability to detect and engage the target using ASELSAN’s MURAD AESA radar and fire a TÜBİTAK SAGE GÖKDOĞAN missile from under its wing, scoring a direct hit. This operation represents a historic breakthrough in unmanned aerial combat technology.
During the exercise, five F-16s and an AKINCI UCAV accompanied KIZILELMA, successfully showcasing manned–unmanned joint flight operations. Observers noted that the integration of manned fighters with unmanned platforms in a single mission underscores Turkey’s advanced approach to air combat strategy.
Even before officially entering service, KIZILELMA has proven its air-to-air combat capability, demonstrating the ability to “see without being seen, strike without being struck.” Analysts describe this achievement as a paradigm shift in global aviation, highlighting the growing role of unmanned systems in future aerial warfare.
With this milestone, Turkey positions itself at the forefront of next-generation aerial combat innovation, combining stealth, precision, and unmanned operational flexibility in ways previously unseen in military aviation.
